My parents don’t get a lot of time off so when they do I’m not going to let the rest of the family go to Niagara while I stay at home making a comic. I hope that seeing Gerald’s sad face again will be enough to tide you over until I next week. I might try to make a comic later in the week if I can but it’s not likely.

TCAF 2010

My haul from this year's TCAF

I know this is really late. I had totally planned to write this post immediately after TCAF. That didn’t happen. Anyhoo I found out about the Toronto Comic Arts Festival last year and knew I would love it. TCAF is unlike any comic convention I have ever been to. They don’t even call it a convention. They refer to it as a festival which actually sounds like a lot more fun than a convention… and it is!

Comic conventions have never really been what I’ve wanted them to be. Movies, videogames, and wrestlers can overshadow the actual art of comics and the comics that are there are generally focused solely on the super hero genre. The majority of the floor is filled with comic book store retailers with a bunch of white boxes filled with thousands of back issues that I won’t understand because I haven’t been reading the series from which they come from the time I was a fetus. While there are always lots of big name artists at these shows most of them work for Marvel or DC rather than create original properties which are what I’m most interested in.

Lemon Inc. Spotlighted on Digital Kontent

Shane Kirshenblatt of Freefall Entertainment and co-organizer of the Creators’ Marketplace, was recently interviewed on the Digital Kontent podcast. At the end of the podcast he does a spotlight on Lemon Inc.

One of several revelations in this podcast is that I’m 15… which I guess I should correct as I’m actually 16. Shane is one of few people who know this as he is my former art instructor. But I guess it is out in the open now.

Shane also discusses his graphic novel series, Dorothy Gale: Journey to Oz, his upcoming horror anthology and the Creator’s Marketplace show, as well as 3D movies and South Park. Listen to the podcast here.

Creators’ Marketplace 2010

If you live in or around the Toronto or Thornhill area and you’re looking for something to do on the weekend of May 1st then might I suggest that you drop by the Creators’ Marketplace. It’s a great local art show held by Shane Kirshenblatt, Sari Kirshenblatt, and Ali Morbi that was created to help support local artists.

The show has everything from comic book art, animation art, fine art, custom made T-shirts, jewlery, and baked goods. You can even meet Kurt Lehner, animation artist for Disney, Warner Bros., Dreamworks, and designer of Franklin the turtle. There will also be a silent auction. All proceeds generated from the auction will be donated to the Foundation Fighting Blindness.

The show will take place at the Thornhill Community Centre. Admission is only 5$ and if you print out this coupon then you can get a dollar off the regular admission price. For more information watch this promo on Roger’s TV.
